Why do we care in Catechesis of the Good Shepherd about the religious potential of children?
Some might answer, “Because children are the future of our Church.” But they’re mistaken. Children ARE our Church.
They get the mystery of our faith. They love Jesus because they know Jesus loves them. They know it, maybe in their heads, but definitely in their hearts.
When you love someone, you want to know more, get closer. What better way to get closer to Jesus than to participate in the Mass?
Children can get to church only one way: when someone takes them. Parents are their first educators, and children grow in their faith when they experience it, especially from a young age.
Who We are
The SonFlower Region of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a nonprofit association of catechists who serve the religious potential of the child in the State of Kansas and the Kansas City, Mo., metropolitan area. A nine-member board of directors leads the SonFlower Region. The members are elected for three-year terms at the annual meeting held the first Saturday of November. Officers are elected within the board.
SonFlower membership is free, and members fall into one of three categories: full, certified Level I and living in the region, voting; affiliate, certified Level I (probably in SonFlower Region) and living outside the region, nonvoting; associate, people interested in our region, nonvoting.
The active support of the region’s membership is crucial to the vitality of our association. Like our catechesis, it’s a slow work. So please offer your help if you have gifts in writing, finances, development, hospitality, event-planning, web administration, membership database, materials-making, or if you just want to be active in our region. Any of the board members would like to hear from you, or Contact SonFlower.
WHAT IS CGS?
Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is faith formation for children ages 3-12 based on the pillars of Scripture and Catholic Liturgy and the educational methods of Maria Montessori. Catechists must be certified through the National Association of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, which collaborates with the international Consiglio in Rome.
Many parishes, schools, and homes around the world have an atrium, which is a space uniquely prepared to meet the spiritual and developmental needs of the child at each stage. Guided by the Holy Spirit, children deepen their relationship with God through their time in the atrium. There, they receive essential presentations from catechists, and then are introduced to materials which aid them in independently pondering the greatest mysteries of our faith.
